GMS-FRETA FREIGHT TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION


GMS-FRETA was officially established at the 4th GMS Summit in Nay Pyi Taw on December 19th 2011.


From its inception in 1992 the Greater Mekong Sub-region, supported by the Asia Development Bank has emphasized the importance of Facilitation of Trade and Transport between the 6 member countries through :

  1. An infrastructure improvement program to remove physical obstacles to trade and
  2. A Cross Border Transport Agreement, signed in 2002 to remove administrative obstacles to trade Facilitation efforts were focused on certain corridors.


By 2008 it was generally recognized that the CBTA was an excellent document but was not being implemented.


Practice on the ground had changed very little in 6 years so the GMS-BF decided to form an action group, the Leaders of the GMS countries agreed and Establishment GMS-FRETA was officially established at the 4thGMS Summit in Nay Pyi Taw on December 19th2011.


Structure:

  1. Greater Mekong Sub –region ̴ The national Governments of Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam
  2. GMS Business Forum ̴ The 6 National Chambers of Commerce
  3. GMS Freight Transport Association ̴ 60 Freight Transport Companies and Associations operating within the GMS

  7. Multi-model development -Ro-Ro services
  8. Multi-model development -Rail services
  9. Flexible operations –Trailer swapping
